Summary: The Director
of Education & Public Programs reports to the CEO and is responsible for
the overall administration of Mobius Spokane's science education grant and
non-grant funded programs and services. This position provides the vision, strategic direction and leadership to
ensure that all programs and services successfully address Mobius Spokane's
mission and guiding principles, are coordinated and communicated internally and
externally, and meet institutional goals and budgets. As a member of Mobius Spokane's senior
management team, the Director of Education & Public Programs contributes to
institution-wide planning, goal setting and policy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee long-range strategic planning,
annual goal setting, program implementation and budgeting for the Program
department. Provide overall vision,
leadership and strategic direction.
- Ensure all education programs embrace Mobius
Spokane's mission and reflect the highest degree of quality and commitment to Mobius
Spokane's mission & guiding principles, and work with the Curator of
Science and science advisory committee members to ensure the scientific
accuracy of all programs. Maintain an
ongoing commitment to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Oversee the hiring, training and supervision of
program staff, volunteers and contractors. Set annual and long-term programmatic goals and objectives, establish,
maintain, and improve curriculum development strategies and program delivery
methods, oversee teacher professional development and the development of
educator resources, and maintain effective and ongoing communication and
coordination of activities within and between the department, the institution,
and the community.
- Model effective leadership practices and
institutional values, and hold subordinates accountable for doing the
same. Meet regularly with staff to
maintain a common vision, facilitate cohesive long-range planning, set
appropriate procedures and policies to create a meaningful and safe visitor
experience, and be open and responsive to community input.
- In coordination with CEO and senior management,
help to seek out new program opportunities and/or funding sources and foster
and maintain connections with local and statewide science and education
communities through involvement with such activities as committees, events,
meetings, and conferences.
- Develop and disseminate an annual program
calendar, and oversee the content development for all written Program
Department curricula and publications.
The Director of Education &
Public Programs supervises a total of 8-12 employees and oversees dozens of
docents and volunteers. Programs include,
but are not limited to, Science Workshops (group field trips), Summer Science
Camps, Inland Northwest-wide Outreach, Science Demonstrations, Special Events, Seminars,
Lecture series, science cafes. Teen Volunteer Program, Activity Station,
Discovery Nights, and others.

Leading candidates will embrace

the institution. The Director of
Education should have the capacity to work at the juncture of innovative
program development and best business practices, of consensus-oriented
management and effective decision-making, and of strategic vision and practical
implementation.
The successful candidate will be
a catalyst for mutually advantageous relationships between the Program, Exhibit
and Enterprise
departments and across sectors and segments externally. As such, the Director of Education &
Public Programs will be an outstanding communicator who encourages
collaboration, coordination, joint ventures, and integration between and among
different interests and disciplines. The
Director of Education & Public Programs will be skilled in administrative
and organizational management and be a motivator and delegator who is open
minded and flexible, as well as intuitive. As such, the Director of Education & Public Programs must be a good
listener, consider appropriate alternatives, and provide incisive, consistent
and collaborative leadership. The
successful candidate will be an individual who can develop alignment and create
a sense of departmental and external cohesiveness and enthusiasm. The successful candidate must have a strong
work ethic, self-initiative, a good sense of humor, and a high level of energy.
Experience
The Director of Education &
Public Programs should have successful leadership experience in one of the
natural sciences and have experience as an educator, communicator and
trainer. Experience in an informal/free
choice learning environment is highly desirable, as is experience with
curriculum development and learning theory, especially in
science-as-inquiry. The successful
candidate should have knowledge of management, strategic planning and financial
systems appropriate to a multifaceted organization with a staff of thirty. The
applicant should also have demonstrated experience in grant and proposal
writing.
Education
A graduate degree in science or
education is desired. Candidates with
Bachelors degrees or other educational credentials coupled with significant and
relevant experience will also be considered.
Compensation
Annual compensation will be
competitive and commensurate with experience. Salary range is $65,000 -$78,000 plus a benefits package.
