Permanent Exhibits
Bayanihan
Step through a portal of culture and far away discovery, beyond the Philippines’ busy capital city of Manila onto one of the seven thousand islands – home to the rural town of Palo. This town is best described by the title of the exhibition – Bayanihan, a Philippine word that captures the essence of community and the feeling of working together. Explore Filipino culture by bargaining at the sari-sari store, shopping at the local fish market, and husking rice in the bahay kubo.
Bayanihan is Sponsored by: The Humanities of Washington and The Filipino-American Association of the Inland Empire.
Geotopia
Get into your element at this intriguing exhibit.
Based on earth science, Geotopia highlights the
interplay of water, wind and weather on our ecosystem.
Featuring the Spokane River and Aquifer, it tells
the story of water and soil conservation and protection
of habitat. An interactive water table lets rivers
and imaginations run wild as visitors discover
that by removing and re-inserting panels, water
currents can change. Live insects and arachnids are included in this exhibit - observe Stick Bugs, our new Crested Gecko, Oswin our African Millipede, and Leggy Peggy our Rosehair Tarantula!
Plus see our newest addition “Ears Looking at You”, a ceramic tile wall mural that is a permanent piece of art created by Ken Spiering, a Northwest artist. The mosaic mural measures 22 feet wide by 8 feet high and is made up of over 3,000 individual pieces of custom-cut tile using 70 different colors with the smallest piece of tile being the pupil of the cougars eye which is the size of a beebee! The striking and detailed mural showcases 26 species of wildlife that live on the banks of the rivers and waterways that flow through the Spokane watershed.
